The HOP today was to the Rock of Ages Granite Quarry in Graniteville, VT. I would not have gone to a quarry on my own, but it was a very interesting tour. Part of the reason I decided to go on the HOP was to see something I would not ordinarily see on my own, so here I am.
In 2008 our tour program went intergalactic when a portion of the
exciting car chase scene for the 2009 Star Trek movie was filmed at our
Smith Quarry. - See more at:

In 2008 a portion of the exciting car chase scene for the 2009 Star Trek movie was filmed at the Rock of Ages Smith Quarry. At nearly 600 feet deep, it is the largest operating deep-hole, dimension granite quarry in the world.

After the tour we stopped at Hope Cemetery. You are only allowed to use Barre granite
(Rock of Ages) for the headstones in this cemetery and some of them are very
creative; not your usual headstone.
We had a short drive through Montpelier, Vermont’s capital,
and stopped for lunch at the Capital Plaza Hotel. Montpelier is the smallest capital in the
US.
A side trip took us by the Von Trapp Lodge (from Sound of
Music fame). It was a truly beautiful
place. It is still owned/run by the
family.
No trip to Vermont is complete without a tour of the Ben
& Jerry’s factory to see how it all began.
As everyone knows Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, two childhood friends,
turned a $5 correspondence course on ice cream-making into a global ice cream
phenomenon. Samples of the ice cream
weren’t bad either!
