And onto Ellis Island ....
For the hundreds of thousands of immigrants that were processed, I think the government made a compassionate and humane effort. They were provided with 3 meals a day by the shipping company and clothing, if needed, etc. was provided by the Salvation Army. For those detained, the families were allowed to say in the dormitories. About 1 in 100 were deported, which seems like good "odds" unless your family member was the one rejected.
After returning to New York we embarked on a walking tour. We went to Times Square and had dinner so we could get the full effect after dark.
Then we walked to Rockefeller Center to see where they "drop the ball," and a brief look at St. Patrick's Cathedral.
We got back to the campground at 1:30 am. It was a GREAT day and I was very glad I got to see all the things we did.
Unfortunately for me, I had to leave at 10am for the drive to Essex Junction, VT.
