Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel—the longest (2.5 miles) highway tunnel in North America, and the first designed for -40 Fahrenheit temperatures and 150 mph winds! |
Driving through the tunnel is the only way, by land, to get into Whittier. There is a schedule for each way and for the train. You can take a scenic train ride from Talkeetna or Anchorage to Whittier, or make the drive, as I did, but everyone, including the train, take the same toll tunnel.
